Bodegas y Viñedos Pujanza | Rioja Alavesa

Bodega Pujanza Winery amongst the vineyards in Laguardia, Rioja

Bodegas y Viñedos Pujanza is the personal project of Carlos San Pedro, one of the leading winemakers in Rioja and member of a well-known wine dynasty from Laguardia (Rioja Alavesa). In 1998, at the age of 25, Carlos decided to set up his own bodega with one of the family vineyards planted by his father. La Viña Grande (also known as Finca Valdepoleo) has 15 hectares and lies at over 600 metres of altitude under the protective shadow of Sierra de Cantabria. Initially, both the vineyards and the winemaking facilities belonged to the family. But Carlos was determined to recover the fundamental roots of Rioja, with his eyes clearly focussed on the terroir, with his own grapes and wines from a single vineyard plot and in 2001 the first vintage was produced from the current bodega. Pujanza currently works 40 hectares of vines, all within the boundaries of Laguardia. The aim of Carlos San Pedro is to create harmonic wines, always with a right balance between fruit and ageing, with elegant and deep palates carrying in their name the landmark of a region. In 2021 Tim Atkin, wine writer and Master of Wine, placed Pujanza as one of Rioja's 'First Growths' in his Bordeaux style of classification for the region.
