Cobb Vineyards in California's Sonoma Coast

In 2001, renowned grape grower David Cobb joined forces with his winemaker son Ross to found Cobb Wines. Marine biologist David planted his Coastlands vineyard in 1989, becoming one of the very first growers to explore the potential of the ‘extreme’ Sonoma Coast, a few miles from the ocean. Ross gained valuable experience with Pinot at Williams Selyem and Flowers, and for six years was winemaker at Hirsch Vineyards while also releasing wines under the family name.

In 2014 Ross, his wife Cindy and their young daughter Kennedy moved to Coastlands Vineyard. David had decided to retire back to Belvedere and Ross jumped at the opportunity to live on and farm the family vineyard.

Today Cobb Wines is fortunate to oversee two estate vineyards in the western Sonoma Coast, and source fruit from a variety of hand-tended, independently owned vineyards. Over the years Ross added Chardonnay into the portfolio, along with small lots of Riesling from Anderson Valley and Mendocino County.

Many Californian winemakers claim a love of burgundy, but Ross’s regular visits seem to have had a more profound effect than most. His are among the state’s most delicate Pinots, as well as telling expressions of place.
