Tenuta J Hofstätter | Alto Adige

Vineyards of Tenuta J Hofstätter in the Alto Adige region of Italy

With fifty hectares of vineyards, Tenuta J. Hofstätter is one of the largest private wine estates in the Alto Adige, and yet manages to live up to its reputation for absolutely pristine quality. The vineyard holdings are well sited, at altitudes of 250-800 metres and, uniquely, located on both sides of the Adige river. The estate is meticulously run by fourth generation Martin Foradori Hofstätter, whose ancestor Joseph founded the winery in 1907.

With the region’s largest plantings of Gewürztraminer and Pinot Nero, the winery is most readily associated to these varieties, however, Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio as well as a relatively new expression of Sauvignon Blanc are all produced with the same degree of care and success. The pinnacle of the wine portfolio, though, is the single-vineyard Barthenau Vigna S. Urbano Pinot Nero, planted in the 1950s by Martin’s father. His neighbours thought he was mad at the time, but this is now one of the finest expressions of Pinot Noir not just in Alto Adige, but in the whole of Europe.
