Only crafted in the most exceptional years in limited quantities (1600 bottles) this Chardonnay is a tribute to founder, Anthony Joseph Vidal, celebrating his unwavering belief in Hawkes Bay as a truly great wine-growing region. 1888 is the ultimate Vidal Chardonnay, only made when everything is in perfect alignment - an incredible growing season combined with a truly exceptional parcel from Vidal's most outstanding vineyard, Kokako. This parcel undergoes a hands-off approach, whole bunch pressing, natural fermentation and extended lees stirring. These factors result in exquisite concentration of flavour, complexity and balance with over 10 years ageing potential. The 1888 Chardonnay is intensely aromatic with citrus blossom, French baguette and complex natural ferment undertones. The palate delivers power and restraint with citrus and pink grapefruit, white stone fruit, roasted nuts and mineral notes. Excellent clear-cut acidity with a lovely satin-like texture leads to an elegant and balanced finish. Complex, persistent, fine and age-worthy.
