The Wine Merchants Red 2018

The Merchants Red Wine is a Spanish red wine specially blended by winemaker Antonio Serrano using a combination of international and local varieties. Merlot is the predominant grape, with Garnacha, Tempranillo and Syrah supporting. The fruit is sourced in Cariñena, a rugged, empty region of Spain with the nearest town, Zaragoza, 50 kilometres away. The varieties are spread over different altitudes, starting at 400 metres above sea-level, rising to 800 metres as they ascend the Sierra de la Virgen mountains. The secret is the diurnal fluctuation, with cool nights even in the height of summer.

The accent is on juicy fruit and supple tannins, whilst still striving to preserve sufficient tannic support in the blend to allow the wine to cross over between tipple and table. The Merlot has a fresh, mulberry note to which Tempranillo adds vibrant red cherry and strawberry along with a herbal undertone. Garnacha adds further freshness, while the Syrah brings energy and spice.
