Escudo Rojo Gran Reserva 2018
Escudo Rojo, a literal Spanish translation of the Rothschild name, has its origins in the Maipo Valley, the historic birthplace of fine Chilean wines. The Escudo Rojo Gran Reserva gets its refinement from French grape varieties and its power from the magnificent Chilean terroir. With traditional grape varieties - Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenere, Syrah, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot - this precise and complex Bordeaux-style blend gives a round, fruit-filled wine that reflects the boldness and elegance of Baron Philippe de Rothschild in the Chilean terroir. Meeting the Baron Philippe de Rothschild criteria for excellence, Escudo Rojo Gran Reserva is remarkable for its intense, complex aromas and flavours, balanced tannic structure and lingering finish. Escudo Gran Reserva initially boasts a beautifully complex and rich nose with juicy black fruit. After a few minutes in the glass, the Carmenere comes through with a hint of smoke and black pepper. The perfectly balanced oak provides a toasty note of vanilla and coffee bean which wraps around a core of cassis and black cherry. The palate has great concentration and balance whilst delivering enough power to deem this wine full bodied, without being clumsy.
