Western Australia

The Western Australia wine region has a rich winemaking heritage and a reputation for producing high-quality and regionally distinct wines. This is Australia’s largest State and spans the western third of the Australian continent, although the winemaking regions are almost entirely concentrated in the south-west and great southern land divisions.

Some regions such as Swan Valley and Perth Hills are close to Perth, the State capital; however, most wine regions are located further south and include Blackwood Valley, Great Southern, Pemberton and Margaret River. It was not so long ago that Margaret River was better known for its classic surf breaks, but scientists like Professor Harold Olmo and Dr John Gladstones identified it as a potentially great grape growing region.

Subsequently, through the endeavours of many talented winemakers, Margaret River has now become renowned as Australia’s premium wine region, offering class and finesse in its wine above weight and power more commonly associated with Australia. Highly regarded as a producer of powerful yet elegant Cabernet Sauvignon, the region has also forged a great reputation for its white wines notably Chardonnay and zesty Semillon Sauvignon Blanc blends.

Across its wine regions, Western Australia produces a diverse range of regionally distinct wines, from evocative Shiraz to a range of unique Cabernet Sauvignon blends.
