The Wine Merchants Traditional Claret by Maison Sichel 2016
The Wine Merchants Traditional Claret is an AOC Bordeaux red produced by Maison Sichel, owner of the illustrious Château Angludet and joint-owner of “Super Second” estate, Château Palmer. It is part of the Sirius range, for which grapes are sourced from the Maison’s own vineyards in the Canton de St Macaire, across the Garonne from Graves (south-east of the city centre of Bordeaux). The meticulous winemaking mirrors that of a Cru Classé, but with the objective of crafting a wine that is modern and approachable in style.
The wine is made with the fruit of 30-year-old vines grown on clay and limestone. A small proportion of the grapes undergo carbonic maceration, contributing to the wine’s bright, primary-fruit character. The rest of the winemaking process is traditional: de-stemming, fermentation at 27 to 32 degrees Celsius, followed by approximately 20 days in vat. The final blend is aged for a few months in new and used barriques.
This classic blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon offers aromas of ripe redcurrant, cassis and a hint of savoury spice. On the palate, its seductive fruit flavours are wrapped around a core of fresh acidity and firm – yet perfectly integrated – tannins. It is approachable now with or without food, but has the structure to age gracefully over the next few years.
