The Wine Merchants White 2018

The Wine Merchants White is a Spanish white wine that uses a combination of international and local varieties. Viura is the predominant variety, with Chardonnay supporting. The fruit is sourced in Cariñena – a rugged, empty region with the nearest town, Zaragoza, 50 kilometres away. The varieties are spread over different altitudes, starting at 400 metres above sea-level, rising to 800 metres as they ascend the Sierra de la Virgen mountains.

The outstanding quality of the Viura this vintage means that it is the dominant variety in the blend supported by Chardonnay. The Chardonnay adds complexity and minerality to the local Viura which, although from old vines and texturally interesting, can be relatively neutral. The mealy, buttery and usefully stony Chardonnay element drives the wine, with its pleasing peach and stone-fruit aspect. The wine is dry but positive, and lifted by a pinch of that minerality.
