De Martino Vigno Old Vine Carignan 2016
The De Martino 'Vigno' is an adaptation of the Spanish term viño, with a 'G' borrowed from Carignan, which is the principle grape variety used in this blend. This is a collaborative project in Chile’s Maule Valley that rescues the tradition of the regions old dry-farmed Carignan vines. De Martino's Vigno is produced from a 70-year-old, dry farmed and non-grafted vineyard called La Aguada, one of the closest Carignan plots to the Pacific Ocean. A beautiful, perfumed nose with elegant, yet rustic touches of cured meats, tree bark, smoke, ripe cherries, and subtle sweet baking spices. Aged 24 months in large neutral oak barrels, or foudres, this is a balanced, supple, meaty, delicious bottle of wine. Drinkable now, but will cellar beautifully over the next 10 years.
