Lapostolle Grand Selection Carménère 2015
The Rapel Valley is one of the few places in Chile where the Carménère grape grows in ideal conditions. It's location in the central part of Chile, including the sub Valleys of Cachapoal and Colchagua, exhibits a semi–arid Mediterranean climate. Rapel also has a cool influence from the Pacific’s Humboldt Current, which lowers temperatures in the coastal areas of the Valley. This leads to warm days with ample sunlight and dry conditions, allowing a slow ripening period. Consequently, the Carménère grape is able to fully ripen but maintain all its fresh notes that are so unique to the variety.
The hand harvested grapes are carefully transported to the winery in the Colchagua Valley, where only the best fruit is selected using state of the art Vistalys optical berry selection technology. Sixty two per cent of the wine was aged for 5 months in French Oak barrels to add an extra layer of complexity but keep the expression of the fruit. The wine was lightly fined and filtered before bottling.
The Grand Selection Carménère displays fresh aromas with red fruit notes such as strawberries and plums, along with red paprika and spices. The palate is medium bodied with nice red fruit expression, juicy tannins and good balance.
