Lyrarakis Ippodromos Vidiano 2018

The Lyrarakis 'Ippodromos' vineyard lies on the top of a mountainside, at an altitude of 610m., on rocky clay soil. It is planted with the very promising and distinctive Cretan grape variety Vidiano. A third of the grapes harvested were selected lagging clusters on lateral shoots (in Crete these secondary bunches are called 'Campanus'), which were vinified whole in 'Perle' type barrels (Perle is a 400 litre French oak barrel with a specific closure that keeps CO2 or reductive conditions inside). The Campanus remained in the Perle barrel for 3 months. The remaining two-thirds of the harvest was spontaneously barrel fermented in new French oak and remained in barrel for a further 2 months after fermentation. The resulting wine displays intense aromas of ripe apricot and peach with buttery, earthy and spicy elements. The palate is full of honeyed richness with great concentration of fruit and an impressively lengthy aftertaste.

Organic Vines in Vineyard

It is estimated that there are more than 10,000 grape varieties in present commercial production, yet this probably includes the same grapes under other names. With the increase of DNA fingerprinting it is thought that the real number might come down closer to 5,000.
