Perticaia Sagrantino di Montefalco 2013

Sagrantino is one of the most tannic grape varieties in the world and creates wines that are inky purple in colour with an almost-black appearance. Sagrantino di Montefalco must be made entirely from Sagrantino grapes and requires a minimum of 37 months ageing before its release, 12 of which must be in oak barrels. Perticaia Sagrantino spends 12 months in small oak barrels, 12 months is steel vats and 12 months in bottle before release onto the market. To the nose there is a subtle scent of spice and cinnamon alongside aromas of red fruits, plum and black cherries; with ageing and refinement in the bottle an aroma of dried prunes will evolve. The palate is quite tannic, full and persistent with a touch of bitterness, making this the perfect partner to red meat dishes, game and mature cheeses. Under perfect storage conditions the Perticaia Sagrantino di Montefalco will evolve further in bottle for another decade.

Organic Vines in Vineyard

It is estimated that there are more than 10,000 grape varieties in present commercial production, yet this probably includes the same grapes under other names. With the increase of DNA fingerprinting it is thought that the real number might come down closer to 5,000.
