Bodegas Mustiguillo Vineyards in Valencia

Bodegas Mustiguillo is a family-owned winery in Valencia, founded 45 years ago and run by winemaker Toni Sarrión. The Mustiguillo estate is situated in a unique Mediterranean landscape, at an altitude of 800m it is sheltered by the Sierra del Negrete mountains but lies within close proximity to the sea. The area is a former sea bed and the soils are high in chalk. Here, amongst olive groves, oak and pine trees, Mustiguillo cultivate organically-farmed vineyards planted to the native Bobal and Merseguera grapes.

Mustiguillo is a member of the Grandes Pagos de Espana and has its own D.O.P. for their Finca Terrerazo Vino de Pago. Nearly two thirds of the El Terrerazo estate is dedicated to growing the indigenous red grape Bobal, mostly from old vines. Bobal is a grape known for its firm acidity and abundance of colour, giving a truly refreshing red wine with Mediterranean accents. The white grape Merseguera is cultivated at 900m altitude at the Finca Calvestra estate, in sandy/chalky soils. The grapes form the basis for the white Mestizaje and the Finca Calvestra wines.

Viticulture is organic, sustainable and Mustiguillo utilise natural cover crops like mustard, radish or legumes to supply organic nutrients to their soils. All vines are gobelet-trained and dry-grown. Winemaking is undertaken on a parcel by parcel basis and all wines are fermented using indigenous yeasts in large, old wooden vats. The handling is as gentle as possible in order to help fully express the varietal characteristics of their native grapes.
