Château Calon Ségur | Saint Estèphe

Château Calon Ségur Walled Vineyard in Saint Estèphe, Bordeaux

Château Calon Ségur is one of the finest and most historic properties in the entire Médoc. It is the most northerly of the Médoc Grand-Crus Classés and is renowned for wines with excellent depth of fruit and great longevity. One of the stars of the Saint-Estèphe appellation, Calon-Ségur was categorised as a third growth in the famous 1855 classification of Bordeaux châteaux.

While wine production can be traced back to the 12th century, it was in the 18th century, with the Marquis Nicolas-Alexandre de Ségur, also owner of Château Latour, Château Lafite and Château Mouton, that the finest chapter of the property’s history was written. It was the Marquis de Ségur who famously declared, “I make wine at Lafite and Latour but my heart is at Calon-Ségur”. The wine's label today includes a drawing of a heart around the Chateau's name.

Calon-Ségur is notable for its single, 75-hectare vineyard which is surrounded by an unbroken, 1,200m long, thick stone wall. The vineyards' easy-draining clay and gravel soils contain an unusually high proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon and some years can see up to 90% Cabernet used in the Grand Vin. The second wine, Marquis de Calon, is predominantly Merlot based and the estate also grows small amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot.
