Domaine Metrat et Fils | Fleurie

Domaine Metrat et Fils Fleurie Vineyards

The wines of Domaine Metrat et Fils represent the absolute antithesis of mass-produced, commercial Beaujolais. Run with rigorous dedication by Bernard and Martine Metrat, this small, family-owned estate produces some of the most profound and age-worthy expressions of the Gamay grape currently emerging from France.

Based in the heart of the region, the Metrat family completely ignores modern winemaking shortcuts. They champion a resolutely old-school approach: hand-harvesting old vines, utilising traditional whole-bunch, semi-carbonic fermentation, and maturing the wines patiently in cement vats and neutral oak foudres. The result is Cru Beaujolais of immense aromatic purity, floral elegance, and genuine structural depth.

While the estate produces a beautifully high-toned and perfumed Chiroubles, their crown jewel lies within the Fleurie appellation, specifically the celebrated La Roilette climat. Most of Fleurie is planted on pure pink granite, yielding delicate wines. However, La Roilette sits directly on the border of Moulin-à-Vent. Here, the soils possess a much higher proportion of clay and manganese. This unique terroir imbues the Metrat Fleurie with a darker, brooding fruit profile and a tannic architecture that allows it to evolve magnificently in the cellar. In blind tastings, a mature Metrat La Roilette is frequently - and understandably - mistaken for a serious Pinot Noir  from the Côte de Nuits.

With soaring prices in the rest of Burgundy, Domaine Metrat et Fils offers an unparalleled opportunity to secure world-class, terroir-driven French red wine that significantly over-delivers on value.
