Gnarly Head | California

Gnarly Head wines began with a vision and a vine. In 2004, on a mission to make a serious Zinfandel, a team of winemakers journeyed to Lodi in central California in search of the famed old vine Zinfandel vineyards. Grown in the head-trained, spur-pruned method for over a century, these vigorous gnarled vines produced more ripened red fruit than they had ever seen. They took it as a challenge to create the biggest, boldest Zinfandel they had ever made. The result was authentic, structured wines with a hint of something unexpected. Something Gnarly.

In the cellar, winemaker Scott Jones seeks to let the vineyard express itself, gently pressing the grapes into fermentation tanks. After several days of fermentation, the wine is gently racked into a combination of American and French oak for malolactic fermentation and ageing. The Gnarly Head team has since expanded the range to include many other wines, all sourced from some of the best vineyards in California. These include an unoaked Viognier, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Despite the variety, all wines are marked by the signature Gnarly house style which is big, juicy and deliciously drinkable.
