Mount Mary | Yarra Valley

Established in 1971, Mount Mary was one of the pioneers of the Yarra Valley. Inspired by the Swiss settlers of the 1850s, John and Marli Middleton resolved to find a suitable site upon which they could establish a small commercial vineyard. Surprisingly, the ideally located, gentle north-facing slope had never been planted with vines and the Middleton’s immediately saw its potential and placed their first plantings.
From the outset they produced wines of rare finesse and purity and Dr John Middleton’s obsession for attention to detail in the vineyard created something that was truly unique. Now at the helm are the third generation Sam and Claire Middleton (brother and sister); Sam has assumed the role of winemaker with equal dedication to that of his grandfather and runs the winery whilst Claire manages distribution and sales. This new generation has brought renewed focus on the vineyard and planting new plots previously undiscovered, but staying true to site and place. Today Mount Mary has 40 acres under vine representing 18 varietals.
Four wines are crafted at Mount Mary, the most famous of these being Quintet, a Bordeaux style blend made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Malbec. Alongside this is a miniscule volume of Pinot Noir. On the whites, a Bordeaux style white ‘Triolet’, composed of Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon & Muscadelle, and a Burgundian inspired Chardonnay. The Mount Mary wines are paragons of elegance and refined detail that build impressively over decades in the cellar.
