Bosnia-Herzegovina

The Danube in Bosnia-Herzegovina

Bosnia-Herzegovina is a small country located in southeastern Europe on the western Balkan peninsula. Until the early 1990s it was part of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, but has since gone its own way and developed a distinctive identity. The majority of vineyards are to be found in the Herzegovina area, particularly around the region of Mostar. The climate here is Mediterranean and wine production is dominated by two indigenous varieties; the peachy, full-bodied Žilavka for white wine and Blatina that provides enjoyable reds, full of fruity, crushed berry flavours and velvety tannins. There are also plantings of Trnjak and good examples of Vranac and Smederevka, as well as international grape varieties such as Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot.
