Château Mouton Rothschild | Pauillac

Classified as a First Growth, Château Mouton Rothschild is located in the village of Pauillac in the Médoc region, 30 miles north-west of the city of Bordeaux in France. Originally known as Château Brane-Mouton, it was purchased by Baron James de Rothschild's English son-in-law, Nathaniel de Rothschild, in 1853, but it was not until his grandson, Baron Philippe de Rothschild took over in 1922, that the fortunes of the estate were transformed.
Baron Philippe was a dynamic figure who revolutionised the estate and was the first to introduce château-bottling in 1924. He also introduced the concept of commissioning an artist to design each new vintage’s label. Some of the most notable contributors include Salvador Dalí, Henry Moore, Marc Chagall, Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud, Anish Kapoor and Peter Doig.
Originally placed as a Second Growth in The Bordeaux Grand Cru Classification of 1855, Baron Philippe successfully contested the classification and managed to get Château Mouton Rothschild placed into the Premiere Cru (First Gowth) in 1973, the only change ever made to the classification.
On Baron Philippe's death in 1988, his daughter and only child, Baroness Philippine continued to help raise the estate to new heights with numerous endeavours at Mouton Rothschild including the introduction of a second wine (Le Petit Mouton de Mouton Rothschild) and also internationally with Opus One in California and Almaviva in Chile. Today, her three children, Camille and Philippe Sereys de Rothschild and Julien de Beaumarchais de Rothschild, continue the efforts of their predecessors.
