The Coonawarra Wine Region's Famous Terra Rossa Soils

The Coonawarra wine region of South Australia has achieved world renown for its high class Cabernet Sauvignon wines, that are grown on the famous "terra rossa" soils. The terra rossa strip is a tiny stretch of land (amongst the most valuable in Australia) that is just one kilometre wide and runs for 12 kilometres northwest through the Coonawarra region. The combination of the nutrient-rich red soil and a notably cool maritime climate - influenced by the Great Southern Ocean - allows the grapes to ripen slowly and evenly. The result is a Cabernet of immense character: intense cassis and black cherry fruit, structured by fine-grained tannins and a signature "minty" or eucalyptus aromatic lift. These are wines of incredible poise and longevity, frequently rivaling the great estates of Bordeaux.

While Cabernet is the headline grape of the Coonawarra, the region’s complex soils also produce exceptional Shiraz and Merlot. Coonawarra Shiraz tends toward a more elegant, "cool-climate" style, showing peppery spice and dark plum rather than the jammy weight found in warmer regions. Recently, the region has also seen success with medium-bodied, savory Cabernet Franc and even crisp, mineral-driven Chardonnay.

At Hic! Wine Merchants, we select our Coonawarra range from producers who respect the distinct "boundary" of the strip. From the historic landmarks like Wynns Coonawarra Estate to the boutique innovators like Penley and Balnaves, our collection highlights the structural elegance that only this unique red earth can provide. Whether you are looking for a young, vibrant red for a monthly tasting or a "bonafide" icon for the cellar, Coonawarra remains an essential benchmark for any wine enthusiast.
