Domaine de la Madone | Fleurie
Domaine de la Madone is located on the slopes of the la Madone hill in Fleurie. The estate takes its name from the small chapel erected at the top of the hill overlooking the village of Fleurie and has been the property of the Després family for six generations.
Surmounted by a statue of the Virgin Mary, the chapel dates from 1866 and was built by the winegrowers to protect the vines against powdery mildew (vine disease). The vines planted on this hill bear the name of the classified climate 'la Madone'. Arnaud Després great-great-grandfather was among the winemakers who hoisted the statue to the top with the help of their oxen.
The la Madone hill is often considered by connoisseurs to be the best of the local climates. It enjoys exceptional sunshine and its soil is composed of pink granite suitable for the Gamay grape variety.
