Planeta | Sicily, Italy
Planeta was founded in 1985 and in a relatively short space of time it has established itself as one of the most dynamic and quality orientated wineries in the whole of Italy. Run by cousins Francesca, Alessio and Santi Planeta the estate won the coveted Cantina dell’Anno (Italian winery of the year award) in 1999 and has gone from strength to strength in the intervening years.
Planeta's international reputation was founded on the quality of its Chardonnay – which remains a benchmark for Italian white wines – but the family has long believed in the potential quality of local Sicilian grape varieties and it now makes outstanding wines from the likes of Nero D’Avola and Frappato.
The ever-dynamic Planeta continue to move their inspirational projects forward and 2010 saw the launch of their wine from the slopes of Mount Etna, Carricante, to widespread approval. In 2011 they released Dorilli, a Cerasuolo Riserva to capitalise on the huge popularity of their Cerasuolo di Vittoria (Frappatto/Nero d’Avola), whilst Plumbago (Nero d’Avola) and the fantastic Cometa gained yet more Tre Bicchieri (three glasses) award’s for them.
