Italy | Trentino Alto Adige
The Trentino-Alto Adige is the most westerly and spectacular of Italy's northeast regions with the vast majority of the area covered by mountainous countryside. French and Germanic grape varieties, such as Pinot Bianco, Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Riesling, dominate the vineyard plantings and have been grown here for more than 200 years, particularly in the Alto-Adige, which was under Hapsburg rule until after the First World War.
German is still the first language for many Alto-Adige producers, who are renowned for their modern, crisp, clean and well-defined wines made from single grape varieties. Further south in Trentino, the Germanic influence fades and the area is definitely more Italian in character. The valley becomes broader, with vineyards planted on the valley floor, as well as on the gentler slopes.
