Weingut Wwe. Dr. H. Thanisch Erben Thanisch | Mosel
Weingut Wwe. Dr. H. Thanisch Erben Thanisch is located in Bernkastel-Kues on the banks of the Mosel River and is the winery of the widow of Doctor Hugo Thanisch, as passed down the Thanisch side of the family. Sofia Thanisch represents the 11th generation of the family and is the fourth woman to manage the estate. Waiting in the wings to carry on this family tradition are Sofia’s two daughters, Christina and Juliane.
The original estate dates back to 1636; however, it was not until the late 19th Century that Dr. Hugo Thanisch established the winery's international reputation, primarily by the spectacular awards and high prices paid for his wines at auction. Tragically, in 1895, Dr Hugo Thanisch died of a heart attack at just 42 years of age. His widow Katharina took on the responsibilities of managing the estate and since then it has born the name “Wwe. Dr. H. Thanisch” (Wwe. is the short version for the German word of “Witwe” which means widow).
In 1988 the Thanisch estate was split between two heirs (“Erben” means heirs), so there are now two Weingut Wwe. Dr. H.Thanisch wineries with very similar names: Weingut Wwe. Dr H.Thanisch Erben Thanisch and Weingut Wwe. Dr H. Thanisch Erben Mueller-Burggraef.
The size of this estate is a modest nine hectares, the Thanisch vineyard parcels lying within a stretch of the Mosel which is relatively straight, a run of south facing vineyards of world renown – within Zeltingen, Wehlen, Graach and Bernkastel. Among their vineyards is the steep, southwest facing Grand Cru Bernkasteler Doctor, one of the most famous in Germany.
