Rall Cinsault 2023
For decades, Cinsault was the workhorse of the South African wine industry, but in the hands of a master like Donovan Rall, it reveals itself as a thoroughbred. The 2023 vintage is a masterclass in transparency and "honest" winemaking. Sourced from dry-farmed bush vines (some in Darling, some in the Swartland), this wine is defined by its use of whole-bunch fermentation. This technique doesn't just add flavour; it builds a scaffolding of fine, spicy tannins that gives the wine its serious edge. In the glass, it is electric. Expect a lifted nose of rose petals, crunchy cranberries, and distinct white pepper. On the palate, it is light-bodied yet intensely textural, avoiding the "fruit bomb" trap in favour of a savoury, saline finish. Rall Cinsault is a red wine of immense charm and energy. While it drinks beautifully now (especially slightly chilled), it has the structure to evolve.
