Cotarella Montiano 2017
The flagship red of Cotarella, Montiano is a 100% single-vineyard Merlot grown in Montefiascone, Lazio. The volcanic, mineral-rich soil of the Montiano vineyard and a rigorous hand selection of these grapes contribute to Montiano’s solid structure and concentration. One of the most sought-after wines from central Italy, this is a perennial favourite of red wine collectors worldwide! Following an extremely rigorous selection of the grapes, fermentation was carried out in small, conical stainless steel tanks, with an extended maceration on the skins and manual punch downs twice daily. Once alcoholic fermentation was complete, the wine was passed to new French oak barrels for malolactic and twelve months’ ageing. This is a deep, rich Merlot, combining dark forest fruits with spicy oak. There is plenty of structure, but the mouth-coating tannins are still plush and in balance, right through to the lengthy finish.
