Maison Piron Morgon Côte du Py 2022
At the heart of the Morgon Cru Beaujolais lies the Côte du Py, a majestic, cone-shaped hill that is arguably the region's greatest vineyard site. The Côte du Py's unique soil - known locally as roches pourries (rotten rocks) - gives the wine an intense ferrous minerality and the remarkable ability to morgonner (to take on Pinot Noir-like, earthy complexity with age). The Maison Piron Morgon Côte du Py is a superb example of this terroir, offering density and concentration from an excellent vintage. Deep, dark garnet with bright ruby reflections, the Piron Morgon Côte du Py displays complex aromas featuring concentrated black cherry, black plum, and hints of forest floor and graphite. Subtle spices and a dark, mineral note anchor the fruit. The palate is full-bodied and muscular compared to other Beaujolais Crus. It delivers a powerful core of dark fruit, framed by firm, velvety tannins. The finish is long, savoury, and shows distinct crushed rock minerality. While approachable now with decanting, this wine will fully integrate and develop secondary, complex flavours over the next 5-10 years.
