Peter Lehmann Stonewell Shiraz 2017

Peter Lehmann’s flagship wine 'Stonewell' was first produced in 1987, made from Shiraz grown in the most premium sites of the Barossa. It was named ‘Stonewell’ after the district that Peter believed best showed the characters admired most in Barossa Shiraz, the fruit is sourced from the estate-owned ‘Stonewell’ vineyard and a handful of small, old vineyards dating back as far as 1885. These old Shiraz vines yield under 6 tonnes per hectare of small, sparse berries which are partially barrel fermented and matured in French oak hogsheads for at least 15 months prior to bottling. Consistent quality for over 30 years has been reflected by countless awards and being rated ‘Outstanding’ in the Langton’s VII Classification; recognising the best of Australian winemaking practices, vineyard provenance and regional voice. Peter Lehmann Stonewell Shiraz is deep purple in colour with a crimson rim. Aromas of black fruit, ironstone and fig are prevalent on the nose, along with spice, char and some cedar undertones from the oak. The palate is well textured, with intense red and plummy fruits as well as dark chocolate. A wine of immense power and grace.

Vintage Availability

We endeavour to display accurate and current vintages on all our wines listed on the website; however, from time to time stocks of the vintage listed do become exhausted. If this is the case with your order we will always contact you to recommend another vintage of the same wine, if it is still available. If the vintage of a wine is important to you then please leave a note at checkout advising us of this.

Stock Availability

As we are retail stockists, selling from our Ledston shop as well as online, it makes it difficult for us to show a 'real-time' inventory of our wines and spirits online. As such, very occasionally, a wine may be out of stock that the website has allowed you to order.

To ensure a timely delivery, we are happy to substitute your order with a similar wine of equal or higher value and at no additional cost to you!

If this is not an acceptable solution please advise us in the 'Add A Comment' section at the checkout.

The Producer Peter Lehmann | Barossa Valley

Peter Lehmann started his own winery in 1979, partly as a means of helping with the glut of grapes then afflicting the Barossa. "I'll take your grapes and turn them into wine," he told the desperate growers, many of them conservative farmers of Silesian descent who regarded their old vines...

Stonewell is back in the game.

Our first vintage of Stonewell was (I think) 1989, or close. It even had a cork. It was a revelation, and our Australian Shiraz of choice for many years. Until of course the new owners, Hess, decided on a "rebrand" and a "style change". Around that time (over ten years ago), we attended a tasting at which there was a representative from the company which owned the Stonewell brand, (The Hess Group). He wasn't that impressed that we found the new style to lack the depth & complexity of the Original. So recently, when I found Stonewell at Hic! it was with some trepidation that I decided to give it a shot. The fact that I have re-ordered will demonstrate that Stonewell is back in the game. Looking at the history on-line I see that the company was sold again to Casella in 2014 Casella is a family run organisation, and so I suspect that this was the point at which the style reverted to how Peter Lehmann wanted it. A compelling & intense level of fruit on the nose. Then you taste the layers of fruit, layers of complexity & that instant hit of brambly blue fruit berries, with a long lingering aftertaste. It's back to how it was, and is a benchmark Shiraz.
