Scala Dei Heretge 2021
The Scala Dei Heretge is an elegant and complex red wine made from the Cariñena (Carignan) grape variety and is a wine that breaks with the "dogma" followed until now by Cellers Scala Dei, where the Garnacha grape has always been their hallmark. Since its re-foundation in 1973, the Scala Dei winery has been based on three fundamental pillars: altitude, soil and Grenache. However, the winery is also home to old vine Carignan, planted on slate slopes at the beginning of the 20th century. Scala Dei Heretge pays tribute to the winegrowers committed to the Priorat and the techniques of this heroic, mountain viticulture which date back to the middle of the last century. The Carignan grapes are sourced from four different vineyards with vines that range in age from 80 to 117 years old. At the winery the typical minimal intervention techniques employed by Scala Dei for their Grenache based wines is adopted, so the wine reflects the peculiarity of the terroir that is so characteristic of Priorat slate soils. Fermentation takes place in open cement vats with 30% of the stems and then remains in contact with the skins for 30 days, from vatting to pressing. Limited to approximately 3,000 bottles, this is a rich red wine with savoury complexity and textured tannins.
