Inglenook Edizione Pennino Zinfandel 2017
The Inglenook Edizione Pennino Zinfandel was created as an homage to Francesco Pennino, maternal grandfather of Francis Ford Coppola, who left Naples in 1905 to seek his fortune in America. Upon arriving in New York he wrote to his wife, "Dear Nina, I am standing in front of the Statue of Liberty. It is beautiful, I wish you could see it." Nina and their children joined Francesco a few months later. As a composer and lyricist, Pennino founded a music publishing company called 'Edizione Pennino'. The company logo is comprised of two images, the Bay of Naples and the Statue of Liberty, reflections of Pennino's mutual love for America and Italy. According to Inglenook's historical records, Zinfandel is the oldest variety planted on the Estate, pre-dating Captain Niebaum's arrival. The Coppolas were advised to remove these vineyards when they first purchased the property in 1975, but because Francis Coppola said that he enjoyed drinking Zinfandel, the vineyards remained. With its vibrant violet-hued ruby colour, the Edizione Pennino Zinfandel is youthful in appearance. Aromas are complex, ranging from ripe strawberry and black raspberry to warm blackberry pie, clove, and a hint of blood orange zest. The wine is velvety, generous, and round. This is a classic example of Inglenook Zinfandel.
