Ēkhô White 2021
The grapes for Ēkhô White are sourced from a highland vineyard at 600m elevation in the foothills of the Za Mountain at the centre of Naxos. The ungrafted bush vines are now over 150 years old. The wine is a field blend of several white varieties based on Potamisi, Aidani and Karaibraim aged on the lees for 10 months. Herbal on the nose with sweet aromas of apricots and some herbaceous notes, the palate has zesty acidity with a Santorinean salinity, tension and energy. Total production was just over 1000 bottles. Echo (Ἡχῶ in Greek) is the mythological nymph that lost her voice and her intimate expression. It is the metaphorical figure and explanation of an acoustic phenomenon. In this project, ēkhô (ἠχῶ written in phonetic alphabet) is linked with the sense of reflection. It concerns the metaphorical connection to the past, the untold expression of an archetypal voice and a current snapshot of a constant flow. Historic lands, heroic viticulture, indigenous varieties and old vines are the core of this effort towards a highlighting journey into the depth of the Greek vineyards and its multiple characters.
