Domaine Metrat Chiroubles La Scandaleuse 2024
If Fleurie is the queen of Cru Beaujolais, then Chiroubles is unequivocally its most ethereal and aromatic secret. Situated at the highest altitude of the ten designated Crus, the dramatically steep, pink granite slopes of Chiroubles experience cooler nights and a longer growing season. This unique microclimate produces the most delicate, floral, and bright expression of the Gamay grape. The Metrat family’s La Scandaleuse is a masterclass in this high-altitude terroir. Sourced from gnarly, low-yielding old vines clinging to these challenging inclines, this wine is a testament to traditional, intervention-free winemaking. By employing classic whole-bunch, semi-carbonic fermentation and eschewing new oak in favour of neutral cement vats, Bernard and Martine Metrat have captured the absolute essence of the Gamay grape. In the glass, La Scandaleuse lives up to its name by offering an almost scandalous amount of perfume. Expect a lifted, highly aromatic nose dominated by violets, peonies, and wild strawberries, underpinned by a distinct, chalky minerality. On the palate, it is vibrant, energetic, and incredibly refreshing, with a silken tannin structure that makes it dangerously drinkable. Brilliant when served with a slight chill alongside a classic charcuterie board, roast poultry, or even grilled salmon.
