Poggio al Tesoro | Bolgheri

Poggio al Tesoro Driveway

Poggio al Tesoro is located on the Tyrrhenian coast in the beautiful Tuscan region of Bolgheri. It was purchased in 2002 by Marilisa Allegrini and her brother Walter, who were inspired to take on a new challenge beyond the confines of their beloved Valpolicella. The first vineyard they bought, Le Sondraie, is next door to Ornellaia and was previously rented by them. It is 50 hectares in size and is planted with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and a small amount of Vermentino.

Poggio al Tesoro owes a great deal to the far sightedness of the late Walter Allegrini, the wine-maker from Valpolicella who loved Bolgheri and was Allegrini’s enthusiastic forerunner in Tuscany. Walter had always been personally involved in the viticultural aspects of the family business, and he intuitively grasped the importance of a territory whose special characteristics could be further experimented with and enhanced. When the time came to purchase the parcels of land that would constitute the current Estate, he chose plots near the sea as well as others near the hills, aiming with considerable far sightedness at a diversification in terroir's as well as grape varieties.

Within just a few years, Poggio al Tesoro has become one of the most dynamic wineries in Bolgheri, with wines that are distinguished by their excellence and originality and each with a distinct personality.
