Heidi Schröck & Söhne 'Rusterberg' Zweigelt 2022
The Heidi Schröck & Söhne Zweigelt Rusterberg is a red wine sourced from two small vineyard plots on the Ruster Berg, the hills surrounding the famous village of Rust. Austrian winegrowers refer to Zweigelt as ‘the fighter’ due to its hardy nature. However, this belies its sensitive, elegant character, particularly in the hands of Heidi Schröck. Viticulture is done sustainably, without the use of herbicides or insecticides and the growth of local plants as cover crop is encouraged. After pressing, the wine was put into large old oak barrels (up to 60 years old) for malolactic fermentation. Afterwards the wine was racked for a final time and went through gentle filtration before bottling. The wine is dark ruby red in colour, with aromas of raspberries and hints of cocoa. The palate has a juicy core of red cherry and plum, with smooth tannins.
