Hugo Mendes Talha 2021

The Hugo Mendes 'Talha' is a red wine blend of Aragonês, Trincadeira and Tinta Grossa unique to the Portuguese wine region of Alentejo. The winemaking process for a Talha wine is very simple and was implemented by the Romans over two thousand years ago. In the Alentejo region, the technique has been preserved until today, and has been passed down from generation to generation, in an almost immutable way. To make the wine, the grapes are crushed and then are put inside the clay amphorae, or talhas, where fermentation spontaneously takes place. During this period, the grape pulp and skins rise to the surface and form a solid mass. This is punched with a wooden plunger and is pushed back down into the must to transmit more colour, aroma and flavour to the wine. When fermentation is complete, the mass settles to the bottom of the talha where it serves as a filter. Additionally, by law, the wine must remain on skins until at least 11th November (St Martins Day). "Bright mid crimson. Very, very scented, pure cherry. Beautifully fragrant with both sour cherry and sweet red fruits, plus a light, leafy freshness. Extremely fine tannins – elegant and chalky. So much drinking pleasure. Peppery and scented. Long, too. (Julia Harding, 17 points, JancisRobinson.com)"

If you live in one of these restricted postcode delivery areas the delivery charge is £20 for orders under £165.00. Orders £165 to £249 are subject to a £10 delivery charge. Orders over £250 are delivered FREE. If you are happy to proceed with an order including the stated delivery charges we will raise a separate invoice for the additional cost and email it to you. Find out more on our Delivery Page

Delivery Times

We aim to to have your delivery with you within 5-7 working days of receiving your order, but often it can be much sooner. If you need your order by a certain date please get in touch and we'll do our best to get it to you as required.

Vintage Availability

We endeavour to display accurate and current vintages on all our wines listed on the website; however, from time to time stocks of the vintage listed do become exhausted. If this is the case with your order we will always contact you to recommend another vintage of the same wine, if it is still available. If the vintage of a wine is important to you then please leave a note at checkout advising us of this.

Stock Availability

As we are retail stockists, selling from our Ledston shop as well as online, it makes it difficult for us to show a 'real-time' inventory of our wines and spirits online. As such, very occasionally, a wine may be out of stock that the website has allowed you to order.

To ensure a timely delivery, we are happy to substitute your order with a similar wine of equal or higher value and at no additional cost to you!

If this is not an acceptable solution please advise us in the 'Add A Comment' section at the checkout.

The Producer Hugo Mendes - The Wizard Apprentice | Lisboa

By the time Hugo Mendes, a.k.a. ‘The Wizard Apprentice,’ graduated in Biotechnology Engineering in 2005, he had fallen hopelessly in love with wine. The same year, he joined Quinta da Murta in Portugal’s Arinto epicentre, Bucelas in Lisboa. Learning on the job, by 2010 Hugo had worked his way up...

Organic Vines in Vineyard

It is estimated that there are more than 10,000 grape varieties in present commercial production, yet this probably includes the same grapes under other names. With the increase of DNA fingerprinting it is thought that the real number might come down closer to 5,000. Many varieties of grape are known...
