It is estimated that there are more than 10,000 grape varieties in present commercial production, yet this probably includes the same grapes under other names. With the increase of DNA fingerprinting it is thought that the real number might come down closer to 5,000.

Many varieties of grape are known by several different synonyms depending on which country (or even which region within a given country) the grape is grown. Synonyms relating to local clones or sub-varieties are often regarded as a single separate variety in their own right. And many synonyms revolve around the name of another grape variety, although they are not necessarily related.

Most lesser known blends and varieties are traditional to specific parts of the world.
