Domaine du Pélican Arbois Pinot Noir 2018
After much deliberation Domaine du Pélican decided to produce a 100% Pinot Noir cuvée for the first time from the 2018 vintage. The team had resisted until then because they were concerned that they would perhaps not master the vinification of Pinot Noir outside of Burgundy. The wine is made mostly from grapes grown on their Clos Saint Laurent parcel that is located just behind the winery and sits at an altitude of approximately 350 meters. The soil is made of fallen rocks ("éboulis calcaires") of Bajocian limestone over grey marls (Lias) and the vines are between 10 and 45 years old. Aged in a combination of Burgundy barrels (60%) and in vats (40%) no new oak is used. Earthy and medium-bodied, the wine shows flavours of red fruit, cranberries and toasted bread, with mineral-laden undertones and refreshing herbal notes shining through on the finish.
