Vietti 'Derthona' Timorasso 2021
Vietti 'Derthona' Timorasso is a white wine made from 100% Timorasso, an ancient Piedmontese grape variety that was on the verge of extinction in the 1980s. Pre-phylloxera it used to be an important variety, but as a delicate, low yielding variety to cultivate, it fell out of favour. However, it is now enjoying a resurgence in popularity. The vines are grown in the Colli Tortonesi DOC where the climate is warm and has a Mediterranean feel to it. The wine takes its name ‘Derthona’, from the traditional name in the local dialect for the town of Tortona. At the winery the grapes were destemmed and then gently pressed. Fermentation took place with selected yeasts mostly in ceramic vessels and also, a smaller portion, in stainless steel tanks and large oak casks. The wine did not undergo malolactic fermentation, retaining a crisp style. The wine was matured for 10 months in ceramic vessels, steel vats and large oak casks with frequent bâtonnage imparting balancing texture. The Vietti 'Derthona' is a smooth, creamy and beautifully balanced Timorasso, delivering notes of pear, peach layered with mineral and floral nuances and delicious honey tones.
