France | Côte de Nuits
The Côte d’Or is the departmental name attributed to the Côte de Nuits and the Côte de Beaune, both areas of fine red and white wine production. However, the Côtes de Nuits is considered essentially a red-wine area as it contains over twenty of Burgundy’s red grand crus, making it a place ‘par-excellence’ for the production of the world’s great Pinot Noir wines.
By avoiding the A31 toll road and deviating onto the ‘Route National’ N74 south of Dijon a narrow strip of magical villages adorn your route with some of the richest names in Burgundy: Gevrey-Chambertin, Morey-St-Denis, Chambolle-Musigny, Vosne-Romanée and Nuits-St-Georges - toll charges apart, it is certainly worth the detour!
The red wines produced here are often of full-body and have great ageing potential.
