Sevilen Nativus Kalecik Karasi 2020
The focus of the Sevilen Nativus range is to highlight the unique characteristics of Turkey’s most significant native grape varieties. Pronounced 'Kal-le-djic-car-ah-ser' Kalecik Karasi is an indigenous Turkish grape variety famous for its unique aroma and flavour. The grapes come from vineyards in Güney at an altitude of between 700 and 900 metres above sea level. The vines have an average age of twenty-five years and are planted on a mix of limestone, alluvial loam and mudstone clay. The grapes were picked by hand and underwent fermentation in stainless-steel tanks at 23-25°C, with fifteen days’ maceration on the skins. After fermentation, 20% of the wine underwent a period of ageing in 300-litre, medium toast, French oak barrels. Up front this has plenty of cherry and red berry fruit, followed by rich notes of plums and dark chocolate. The soft tannins so typical of this grape variety are present on the mid-palate and the finish is lifted by a fresh acidity and a touch of spice.
