Clau de Nell Cuvée Violette 2019
Clau de Nell is located in the Loire Valley wine region of Anjou and the winery itself is situated in the village of Ambillou-Château. The property boasts 12 hectares of vines planted to Cabernet Franc, Chenin Blanc, Grolleau and Cabernet Sauvignon. The Cuvée Violette is a red wine blend of Cabernet Franc (80%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (20%); however, the blend of each grape variety depends on the vintage. The vines range in age from 35 to 45 years for the Cabernet Franc and 60+ years for the Cabernet Sauvignon and cultivation is undertaken adopting biodynamic practices. At the winery the grapes are destemmed and fermented using native yeasts. The wine is aged for 12 months on fine lees; 50% in Burgundy casks (used five times before), in ancient troglodyte cellars cut into the limestone hillside on the property and 50% in large foudre followed by 6 months in stainless steel vats. Bottled with fining nor filtration on a 'flower day'. The Cabernet Sauvignon element adds a spicy side, with touches of liquorice in addition to cherry, blackcurrant and blackberry fruit flavours. The robust and powerful character of the Cabernet Sauvignon unites with the Cabernet Franc to gain freshness and liveliness. This is a complex, smooth wine with elegant tannins.
