Lothian of Elgin 'Biosphere' Chardonnay Sur Lie 2024
The Lothian of Elgin 'Biosphere' Chardonnay Sur Lie is a cool climate unwooded Chardonnay that offers a refuge for those drinkers who avoid this grape variety because of the oak they expect to find. This wine was fermented in a temperature controlled stainless steel tank and then left on its lees. These are the yeast cells that fall to the bottom of the tank after fermentation and with regular stirring they keep the wine fresh and protected from oxygen. In time they lend the wine a sophisticated mouthfeel and length. Pale lemon in colour, the aroma is fresh and lively with frangipane, vanilla and crème fraîche intertwining with the enticing scents of nectarine, citrus and apple flesh with a dusting of spices and honeysuckle. A mineral-edged acidity upon entry, this mid-bodied breezy Chardonnay exhibits notes of crushed biscuits, lees and juicy orange segments. An oatmeal creaminess in the mid-palate continues to the long finish with a lick of vanilla on the conclusion.
