Wine By Grape Variety | Godello

Healthy organic vines in vineyard

Godello is a white wine grape variety grown primarily in northwest Spain and northern Portugal. The grape variety is characterised by its small-sized berries produced in closely packed, small bunches. It is capable of producing very fine white wines and it is in the Valdeorras wine region of Green Spain that it has seen greatest success. Bodegas Rafael Palacios (managed by the brother of Spain’s leading winemaker Alvaro Palacios) has been the driving force behind the revival of the grape in this region.

Godello is early ripening and and thrives in dry sites. It is sensitive to fungal diseases, including powdery mildew and botrytis bunch rot.

Godello wines from Galicia tend to be intense, mineral-rich and long-lived, and typically respond well to barrel fermentation.
