IDDA Etna Rosso 2017

IDDA Etna Rosso 2017 is the inaugural vintage from the newly formed alliance between the Gaja and Graci families. A venture founded to explore the southern slope of Mount Etna, with the purpose of searching for vineyards that express elegance and complexity. The winery presently own 20 hectares of vineyards sited between 600 and 800 metres above sea level in the villages of Belpasso and Biancavilla. The grape varieties currently cultivated are the red Nerello Mascalese and the white Carricante, although more vineyards are in development. The IDDA Etna Rosso is made from 100% Nerello Mascalese fermented in a combination of oak and concrete vats, which was then followed by 24 months of ageing in oak and concrete. To taste, sweet aromas, like marzipan, sour black cherry and mulberry rise from the glass. The wine shows notes of candied citrus fruits, tomato leaves and oregano and has a clear expression of ripe and sweet fruit on the palate. This is remarkably Burgundian in both weight and style for a wine produced somewhere so completely different.
