Viña Arana Rioja Gran Reserva 2015
With the debut 2012 vintage of Viña Arana Gran Reserva, La Rioja Alta became the first Rioja producer to produce three Gran Reserva's, with Arana taking its place alongside the fabled 904 and 890. The new release of the 2014 Viña Arana marks the second vintage of this wine and, as it was the only Gran Reserva produced by La Rioja Alta in 2014, it contains all the best fruit from across La Rioja Alta’s vineyards. The inaugural vintage was awarded a platinum medal at Decanter World Wine Awards 2019 and 95 points from James Suckling; however, as the winemaking team at La Rioja Alta have used all Gran Reserva fruit for this vintage, the 2014 is, without a doubt, even better. The elegance and complexity of this wine is simply astonishing and it is like a baby 904. The winemaking team have used a higher toasting on the oak barrels in 2014, which has reduced the tannic grip and amped up the spice character and fresh fruit. Like all of Rioja Alta’s Gran Reserva's, this new release could age for well over a decade, but the crunchy fruit, supple mouthfeel, and tobacco-leaf finish are simply irresistible now. At six years of age, having spent three in barrel and two in bottle, Arana displays intense aromas of redcurrant's, raspberries, wild blackberries and ripe red plums. These create a complex bouquet alongside the balsamic notes from the barrel: vanilla, cloves, coffee, caramel and brioche. Elegant, vibrant and well-balanced on the palate, with smooth, sweet tannins and a savoury character on the finish. The long maturation has created exactly what La Rioja Alta look for in their Gran Reserva's: complexity and elegance. To enjoy now, but with a long life ahead!
