France | Languedoc Roussillon
The Languedoc - Roussillon wine region in the south of France is one of the largest areas planted to vines in the world and accounts for almost a third of the total French wine production. As suggested by the double barrel name the region actually comprises two distinct and independent wine regions, Languedoc and Roussillon. The Languedoc wine region stretches from the Rhone down to the Pyrenees Mountains along the Mediterranean coastline and the Roussillon wine region goes from Perpignan to the Spanish border.
In recent years the quality of wine production has rapidly improved in the Languedoc-Roussillon; it had to in order to sustain continued commercial success and compete against the likes of Chile, Argentina and Australia. Consequently, innovative producers are focussing on producing fresh, modern wine styles that sit alongside those wines from long standing and established appellations such as: Corbières, Minervois, Saint-Chinian and Faugères.
This is a fascinating area of wine production that offers a great range of wine styles and types to explore and enjoy including full bodied reds, light-dry rosé, white wines and the sparkling wines of Limoux.
