Antonelli Chiusa di Pannone Montefalco Sagrantino 2012
This Antonelli Montefalco Sagrantino is sourced from the eponymous Chiusa di Pannone vineyard with south facing vines on slopes at 400 metres above sea level. Fermentation takes place using gravity due to the two levels of the cellar with skin contact lasting 3 to 4 weeks and then malolactic fermentation taking place in wood. Maturation takes place in large oak barrels for at least 30 months, followed by some months in glass lined cement vats before being bottled unfiltered, where it rests for a further 2 years prior to release. Dense, powerful and long lived, this is a superior expression of Sagrantino and the eponymous single vineyard from where it hails. Intense ruby red in colour the aromas are rich and powerful, ethereal and very complex. Typically characterised by notes of fruit and aromatic herbs, with citrus features, cherry, berry, mint and oregano. On the palate this wine is very structured, with firm and integrated tannins. A complex wine that is best expressed after long bottle ageing and enjoyed along with roasted or stewed meats.

The Primary Grape Wine By Grape Variety | Other Varieties
It is estimated that there are more than 10,000 grape varieties in present commercial production, yet this probably includes the same grapes under other names. With the increase of DNA fingerprinting it is thought that the real number might come down closer to 5,000.
