Antonelli Montefalco Sagrantino 2017
This is the traditional red wine of Montefalco, made exclusively from Sagrantino grapes, from vines grown for centuries on the slopes of the Umbrian hills. Little known outside of Italy Sagrantino di Montefalco is characterised by its great structure and capacity for longevity. Antonelli's organically grown Sagrantino grapes undergo gravity-fed fermentation in contact with the skins, thereafter clarification occurs spontaneously without the need for clarification. The wine is then matured in large oak barrels for at least 18 months and then settles in glass lined cement vats for some months before being bottled. Sagrantino di Montefalco requires a minimum 37 months ageing prior to its release. Intense ruby red in colour the nose is rich and powerful, ethereal and very complex with notes of fruit and aromatic herbs, featuring citrus, cherry, wild berry, mint and oregano. The palate is structured, with firm integrated tannins and a perfect partner with grilled and roast meats, stewed red meats, game and mature hard cheeses. Sagrantino will generally reache full maturity after 10-15 years from the harvest; however it is able to bottle age for more than 30 years.
